It's hard to come back from a third-world country, especially when everyone around you has never even been to a third-world country. It's not really something you can explain in the suburbs.
That doesn't mean there is no suffering in the US, it's just different. In some sense, I think it's easier to volunteer in the third-world because you can just separate yourself from it. It's also really hard to work in the true underbelly of the US. We have plenty of homeless and sick and hungry also, it's just right in our neighborhood.
