The Art of Video Games at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The selection of recent PC games demonstrating the core gaming traits are:

Action – Portal (2007) by Valve
Kim Swift – lead developer
Chet Faliszek, Marc Laidlaw, and Erik Wolpaw – writers

Target – flOw (2006) by Sony
Jenova Chen, Nicholas Clark – game design

Adventure – Fallout 3 (2008) by Bethesda Softworks
Todd Howard – executive producer
Emil Pagliarulo – lead designer
Istvan Poly – lead artist

Tactics – Minecraft (2009) by Notch [Mojang]
Markus Persson – game design

…I’m a bit curious about the choice for Tactics. Not because of any slight against Minecraft (in fact I absolutely love it), but simply because Minecraft really isn’t quite the sort of game that could fit into much of a single definition. Though if I really had to choose: I’d sooner place it under Adventure than Tactics.

For that matter I might be inclined to put Portal (among my most beloved of games ever) under Tactics. And Fallout 3 up to Action.
